MOVAL Drain System is an innovative product invented by Ir. Dr. Nickholas Anting Anak Guntor, Associate Professor at Faculty of Civil Engineering and Built Environment, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. This technology is invented to solve current concrete leakage originated from bathroom, which usually occurred in multi-storey buildings.
Conventional plumbing practices often struggle to ensure that the waterproofing membrane is securely bonded to the surface of the drain pipe during bathroom construction. Over time, moisture and water can infiltrate the screed or mortar layer, gradually weakening the bond between the waterproofing membrane and the drain pipe. As the waterproofing layer deteriorates, water is able to seep deeper into the concrete slab. Prolonged exposure eventually leads to leakage, causing costly damage and long-term maintenance challenges.
MOVAL Drain System is designed specifically to overcome these challenges, offering a more reliable and durable solution to prevent water ingress and protect the integrity of concrete floors in modern buildings. It has two key components engineered to address the root causes of concrete leakage in the bathroom:
a) Flange
The MOVAL Flange is designed to ensure the proper alignment and secure installation of the waterproofing membrane around the drain pipe. By creating a precise and stable interface, the flange acts as a critical barrier, protecting the membrane from failures caused by persistent moisture and water exposure. This design improvement significantly reduces the risk of membrane detachment and the subsequent development of leaks.
b) Weep-Holes
In addition to the flange, the MOVAL Drain System incorporates a novel, patented weep-hole technology. These weep-holes function to channel and remove infiltrated water and moisture trapped within the mortar or screed layer. By providing an efficient drainage path, the weep-holes help relieve hydrostatic pressure exerted on the waterproofing membrane, thereby enhancing its durability and extending its service life.
Applications
The MOVAL Drain System is easy to install and is best incorporated during the design phase, as its technical dimensions and features comply with standard construction practices. For existing buildings with leakage issues, the system can also be retrofitted without extensive demolition work, offering a cost-effective and quick installation process.
